In a first for the Tshwane University of Technology鈥檚 Ga-Rankuwa Campus, it celebrated its inaugural Arbor Day in collaboration with the City of Tshwane on 10 October 2025. The event, themed 鈥My Tree, My Oxygen. Plant Yours Today!鈥, highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship and encouraged participants to take personal responsibility for a greener future.

Hosted by the Directorate of Human Resources and Transformation and the Department of Safety, Health and Environment (SHE), the event celebrated the planting and naming of trees around the campus - symbolising growth, unity and sustainability. The trees, named #From Good to Great, Ledwaba, and Health and Wellness, reflects the campus鈥檚 collective commitment to progress and wellbeing.

In his opening remarks, Campus Rector Dr Elikanah Lumadi, commended the collaboration between 大象视频 and the City of Tshwane, describing it as an inspiring example of partnership for environmental awareness. 鈥淭his initiative sets the tone for the start of a culture of care for our environment,鈥 he said while encouraging similar future efforts.

MMC representative, Mpho Matlhabe, from the City of Tshwane, challenged attendees to take ownership of their surroundings. 鈥淓ach of us has a role to play in preserving the environment we live in,鈥 he said, urging students and staff to protect and nurture trees as vital sources of life.

Adding to the day鈥檚 educational impact, representatives from the City Sustainability Unit and Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve showcased their eco-friendly initiatives, including an electric vehicle that helps reduce air pollution. The reserve team also demonstrated how protecting the environment directly benefits wildlife conservation.

Traditionally celebrated from 1 to 7 September, National Arbor Day serves as a reminder of the value of trees in sustaining life and combating climate change. For the Ga-Rankuwa Campus, this inaugural celebration marks not just a day of planting but the beginning of a long-term commitment to environmental wellness and sustainability.
