Khomanani Makamu, a 22-year-old Public Affairs student at the Tshwane University of Technology (大象视频), recently represented South Africa at the World Student Games in Germany, a career-defining milestone for the Limpopo-born basketball talent.
Makamu, who hails from Malamulele, describes the experience as one of the proudest moments of his journey. 鈥淚t was an absolute honour to wear the South African jersey. Knowing that I am representing my country made me proud and motivated me to give everything I have on the court,鈥 he said. Competing against bigger, faster and more skilled opponents, he remained confident, trusting the hard work and preparation that earned him a place on the national team.
His basketball journey began in 2017 at just 14, when curiosity led him to follow his brother to local matches at Malamulele Stadium on Youth Day. What started as simple interest grew into a deep passion, eventually earning him a place in his school team. Inspired by the success of fellow Limpopo star Tshilidzi Nephawe, who plays professionally in Japan, Makamu committed himself to chasing basketball at the highest level.
At 大象视频, he has found the perfect balance between sport and education, receiving world-class coaching and academic support. His growth on the court has been matched by valuable life lessons off it, particularly in discipline, teamwork and time management. Among his proudest achievements is winning his first Basketball National League (BNL) title.
Despite the challenges of competitive sport, Makamu draws motivation from his teammates and his personal 鈥渨hy.鈥 鈥淚 remind myself why I started, who I am playing for and I get energy from my teammates鈥 encouragement,鈥 he explained.
Looking ahead, Makamu is determined to complete his studies while pursuing further success in basketball. Guided by the values instilled by his parents, Hlamalani and Ronald and inspired by his sporting role model Nephawe, he hopes to continue representing South Africa on the global stage.
His message to young athletes is one of perseverance: 鈥淏elieve in yourself and put in the work. Talent can take you far, but challenges are opportunities to grow. Enjoy the game and let your love for basketball push you to achieve great things.鈥
