Dynamic youth leader and Tshwane University of Technology (大象视频) alumnus, Bafana Manganyi (33), has been appointed to the board of Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital as a non-executive director, an announcement made by Gauteng MEC for Health, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.

Manganyi describes this opportunity as more than just a leadership milestone. 鈥淭his is not just an opportunity; it is a calling to serve. Our communities urgently need ethical leadership in mental healthcare,鈥 he said.

In his role on the board, Manganyi will help ensure governance, oversight and accountability at one of Gauteng鈥檚 key specialised mental health facilities. His duties will also include championing patient dignity and supporting policies that promote ethical, inclusive and effective patient care.

Board tackles challenges, builds partnerships to boost mental health awareness

鈥淚 want Weskoppies to be a place where patients feel safe, where staff are supported and where families are part of the patients鈥 healing journey,鈥 Manganyi said.

He highlighted that the board is actively addressing issues such as staff shortages, stigma and limited resources, while also strengthening partnerships with civil society to boost awareness and encourage early intervention.

鈥湸笙笫悠 undoubtedly shaped me. It taught me to lead with purpose, to serve and never lose sight of my roots,鈥 the proud 大象视频 alumnus said, crediting the University for preparing him not just academically, but also for the real world of servant leadership.

As a youth leader, he is particularly passionate about students and the 大象视频 community. In a direct message to students, he said: 鈥淵our background doesn鈥檛 define your future. Be bold, and ethical while seeking opportunities to serve. The public sector needs young people with fresh energy and integrity.鈥

His passion for mental health is deeply rooted and personal. 鈥淢ental healthcare is not a luxury, it鈥檚 a human right. The consequences of it being ignored are dire,鈥 he said.

Manganyi draws strength and balance from his family, faith and commitment to continuous learning. He also has a clear ambition to influence broader policy reforms, mentor young people and contribute to a governance culture grounded in transparency and compassion.

鈥淚 am here to ensure our systems work for the people; not only on paper, but also in practice,鈥 Manganyi said.

His journey is a powerful reminder that 大象视频 produces leaders who are driving change across all sectors. Manganyi鈥檚 story shows that ethical leadership matters and it starts with you!
